IBM and Salesforce – an Interesting Partnership
IBM and Salesforce surprised many in early March with an announcement of a strategic partnership to deliver joint solutions designed to leverage artificial intelligence to allow companies to make smarter decisions faster. Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff attended the IBM InterConnect conference in Las Vegas on March 21, 2017. He was on stage with IBM CEO Ginni Rometty discussing artificial intelligence and what Benioff called a “crisis of trust” in the world. There’s a common misconception that AI technologies will cause machines to replace humans in many jobs, and while in some industries, that is true, what Benioff and Rometty stressed is that AI is really forcing a shift in education and training. Benioff said that companies like Salesforce and IBM have an important role to play in restoring trust. “We need to take a big moonshot in our country; we need 5 million apprenticeships in the next five years,” said Benioff, “…whether it’s veterans, kids right out of K-12, whether it’s folks out of some other vocation, bring them in and we can retrain them.” Rometty added, “This is all about a world where it is man and machine, that the goal is augmented intelligence. The purpose is to be in service of mankind.”
